Cantleave, would that be the Dorking Halls?
I have been to many functions there as a child but knew nothing of JWs in those days. Did you used to live near Dorking? I did for many years.

i cannot speak for other countries, but it has become evident of late that more and more talks are being done by presiding overseers at kh's (especially in the west midlands) and they are making it quite clear that they are expecting 3 from every publisher (per day) who visit the dudley assembly hall, west midlands to contribute towards the upkeep of it.. the quote from the po's who have done this talk have said that "it is expected that each publisher will put 3 into the box on each day".. what do you think of that then?
as the world hits an economic breakdown the jw's seem to maximising their income from struggling families.. dudley assembly hall holds about 600-700 people.
i'm sure people are capable of doing the maths.. so much for voluntary contributions !!

i was dfd in 1995 however i still believed it was the truth until 2009. and until then i was fearful of armageddon's day.. i remember every time i'd see a dark sky with thunders and lighting i would question if that was it.
the news of any major disaster, hurricanes earthquakes would ignite fear inside me and i would think that could be the beginning of the end.. when i was around 8 i remember going to visit my grandma and she was watching the news.
a major conflict in the middle east had ended and some president said that the world was not in peace.
I had never been to a KH until 2003.
However, I asked my husband and he said he was scared as a boy but he told himself that he would be 16 years old in 1975 and would be a man then so he would be able to cope with it OK.

Tweetiebird, I am sorry that you may have been cut off from your sister.
However, I truly think that one day something will change her mind and she will want to be your sister again.

Typical pioneer with nothing to say.
Cantleave, thanks for making my day, this made me laugh out loud!!
i want to collect a bunch of things that i can use to help my son see that the wbts and being a jw makes no sense.. i have a few in mind already.
they have to be things that might matter to a teenager, so doctrine will probably be out!.
(if you have read my last post you will see why).
Some good points here, I particularly like Doubtfully Yours' list

I think it's the principle that they always say that they don't have a collection, they make a big thing out of saying that. However, when a church does have a collection you are free to put in whatever you like, nothing at all if you are short.
However, my husband used to pay a substantial monthly amount by Direct Debit to the KH and at the assemblies they still asked for more. There were also collection boxes at the KH and at the Assembly Halls.
I think the point that is being made is that it contradicts what they say.

I am also curious as to why some pagan items are taboo, i.e. birthdays, mothering sunday etc. but it is OK to exchange wedding rings, use the days of the weeks, months etc. since that is pagan too.
i do sincerely want you opinions .
is there a difference in sharing your hope as opposed with pushing your religion ?.
is it in attempting to set some sort of standard for other peoples lives or what makes the difference in your view ?.
I think someone with a sincere faith would stand out because of their demeanour. In other words, they would not have to tell you about it, it is just the way they live their life. You may be drawn to them because of a serenity or peace that may seem to surround them, you ask them how they manage to life, e.g. a stress free life, this is the only point at which they may mention that they have faith.
True faith does not need to be boastful.
Just my own personal thoughts. I will be interested in reading what others think.

but now to something that i have researched.
i dont know whether you remember saying that if we keep talking about armageddon it would not come.
but how can we warn people of the impending disaster if we dont tell them?.
I just found this today and thought I would share it. However, like you both my husband and I keep our mouths shut.
My husband would like to be honest with her but I said it's not right to upset an old lady, she isn of 82 years of age and truly believes Armageddon will happen tomorrow.

But now to something that I have researched. I don’t know whether you remember saying that if we keep talking about Armageddon it would not come. But how can we warn people of the impending disaster if we don’t tell them?
I found many instances when Jehovah God told his people to go and tell the people that disaster would strike, but many ignored the warning to their peril.
1) Noah preached for at least 60 years if not more and built a gigantic ark. The people could see the buiding work but obviously ignored it. Jehovah God told Noah when to go into the ark with his family and then the flood came. Mt. 24:36-39. Noah was told when to go into the ark, but the world of that time took NO NOTE and swept them all away. He. 11:7, 2 Pe. 2:5 a PREACHER of righteousness.
2) When the 10th plague visited the Egyptians the Israelites were told to stay indoors for their own safety. Ex. 12:23.
3) Before the destruction of Jerusalem the Christians were told to flee the city when the town was surrounded by the roman army. Mt. 24:15-18
4) Jehovah’s people have always known when trouble was coming and how they coud find safety through Jehovah’s means. It is people outside the congregation who ignore all the warnings that Jehovah has kindly made known to them but they stubbornly refuse to take note. It is unbelievers who will say “Peace and Security” when sudden destruction will come instantly upon them. Just as Noah, the Israelites and the early Christians were not surprised, neither will we be. 1 Thess. 5:1-6. Verse 4: But you brothers, you are not in darkness so that that day should overtake you as it would thieves.
(Todays Day text)
We are actually urged byJesus Christ to tell the good news of Jehovah’s Kingdom, he would not tell us to do something and then withhold the Kingdom since we talk about it, it makes no sence.
So, I hope that these few scriptures have cleared up the matter and that’s the reason I urge you to go to the meetings. As for myself, I will do exactly as Jehovah asks me to do. Ge. 6:22, “but as for me, I shall serve Jehovah”. Josh 24:15.
